Mostar

Herzegovina's karst heartland around Mostar, shaped by the Neretva canyon and dry Mediterranean-edge limestone.

April - October

Mostar sits where the Neretva river cuts through bare limestone on its way toward the Adriatic, giving Herzegovina a drier, rockier character than the forested north.

The cliffs above the city and the surrounding karst ridges suit via ferrata and scrambling routes with long sight lines and little shade, so an early start matters in summer.

Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures for climbing here.

Via Ferrata Podružje — Ilirski Put (Mostar)

An unusual via ferrata that follows the Podružje canyon above Mostar, at points running right along the riverbed itself. One of the easier routes in the region and a good choice for a first via ferrata, but best avoided after heavy rain, when the canyon can flood.

Via Ferrata Fortica (Mostar)

A short, spectacular climb up the Fortica ridge above Mostar, crossing a 35-metre suspension bridge with sweeping views over the Neretva valley. At barely 200 metres and about 30 minutes of climbing, it's an easy add-on to a day in Mostar rather than a full expedition.
